Unprecedented

This has been a remarkable week in the history of television. In response to an unprecedented Facebook campaign, the inimitable Betty White hosted Saturday Night Live, to great response, apparently the best ratings in 18 months.

Now there have been occasions where fan outcry has managed to prevent or reverse the cancellation of a television show, Star Trek and Chuck being a couple of the more notable examples.

There have been occasions where movies that didn't do as well as hoped at the box office have been redeemed by DVD sales, for instance The Matrix or The Boondock Saints.

There have been instances where cancelled television series have actually been brought back from cancellation by DVD sales, specifically Futurama and Family Guy.

However, as far as I am aware, this is a totally unprecedented event, where the audience did not simply get what they wanted back from the void or prevent it's cancellation.

The audience decided what they wanted, they asked for, nay, demanded it, and by God they got it. And by God it was ... well it was all right, I mean, it's Saturday Night Live.

I have to wonder what the suits at the network are thinking right now. Are they confused? Are they worried that now that the audience has had a taste of the power they take for granted that they will demand more?

If I were a suit, I would be worried about that. Because this is the audience. If you give it something, you'd better be prepared to keep giving it that, because it's hunger knows no bounds. Caution is necessary in feeding the beast though, as this 500 million eyed monster is a fickle one. Sometimes it just enjoys playing with it's prey, eventually getting bored and setting it free instead of devouring it.

Just look at Snakes on a Plane.
